Full, abbreviated and key-number wheels
There are three kinds of lottery wheels. They all spread your numbers over several tickets, but they differ in how much they cover and how many tickets they cost. The examples below use Powerball (5 numbers from 1–69, $2 per play) and the same 10 numbers each time, so you can compare them directly.
Full wheel: every combination
A full wheel plays every possible combination of your numbers. If the winning numbers are among them, one of your tickets has them all.
- 10 numbers in a 5-number game = 252 tickets ($504 in Powerball)
- 12 numbers = 792 tickets
Use it when you play in a group with a big budget, or with very few extra numbers: 6 or 7 numbers in a 5-number game is only 6 or 21 tickets.
Abbreviated wheel: a guarantee for far fewer tickets
An abbreviated wheel plays only a carefully chosen part of all combinations, with a clear promise such as “3 if 4”: if 4 of the winning numbers are among yours, at least one ticket has 3 of them.
| 10 numbers, Powerball | Tickets | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Full wheel | 252 | $504 |
| 4 if 5 | 14 | $28 |
| 3 if 4 | 7 | $14 |
| 3 if 5 | 2 | $4 |
The trade-off: the smaller the wheel, the weaker the promise. “3 if 5” costs only 2 tickets, but it only promises 3 matches even if all five winning numbers are among yours.
Use it when you want to play more numbers on a normal budget. This is what most players use, and every abbreviated wheel on MustLotto has been checked against every possible draw.
Key-number wheel: one number on every ticket
If you feel strongly about one number, a key-number wheel puts it on every ticket and wheels the rest. Because each ticket needs one number less from the wheel, you need fewer tickets for the same guarantee.
| 10 numbers, Powerball | Normal wheel | With 1 key number |
|---|---|---|
| 4 if 5 | 14 tickets | 9 tickets |
| 3 if 4 | 7 tickets | 4 tickets |
The catch: the guarantee only holds if your key number is drawn. In Powerball that happens about once in 14 draws (5 of 69 numbers). If the key misses, the wheel’s promise doesn’t apply. A key number is a bet on that one number, not a free upgrade.
Use it when you have one number you really trust, and you accept that the guarantee depends on it.
Which one should I choose?
| You want… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Every combination, budget is no issue | Full wheel |
| More numbers with a guaranteed minimum | Abbreviated wheel |
| The cheapest wheel, and you trust one number | Key-number wheel |
Whatever you choose, a wheel never changes the odds of a single ticket. It changes how your tickets work together. Play only with money you can afford to lose.

Frequently asked questions
Is a full wheel better than an abbreviated wheel?
It covers more, but costs far more. With 10 numbers in Powerball a full wheel is 252 tickets; a "3 if 4" abbreviated wheel is 7.
What is a key number in a lottery wheel?
A number that appears on every ticket of the wheel. It lowers the number of tickets, but the wheel's guarantee only holds if the key number is drawn.
How many key numbers can I use on MustLotto?
One key number per wheel at the moment.
Do abbreviated wheels really keep their guarantee?
Yes. Every abbreviated wheel in the MustLotto library has been checked by computer against every possible combination of winning numbers.
