Pick 3 and Pick 4: straight, box and combo

Pick 3 and Pick 4 (and their cousins Pick 2 and Pick 5) are daily number games: you choose digits from 0 to 9, and most states draw twice a day. What you win depends on how you play your number. This guide explains the play types, the real odds and how add-ons like Fireball and Wild Ball work.

Straight: exact order

A straight play wins only if the digits come out in exactly your order. It pays the most.

Box: any order

A box play wins if your digits come out in any order. You win more often, but the prize is smaller. How often depends on your digits:

Pick 3 boxExampleWinning ordersOdds
6-way (all different)1-2-361 in 167
3-way (one pair)1-1-231 in 333
Pick 4 boxExampleWinning ordersOdds
24-way (all different)1-2-3-4241 in 417
12-way (one pair)1-1-2-3121 in 833
6-way (two pairs)1-1-2-261 in 1,667
4-way (three alike)1-1-1-241 in 2,500

Triples like 7-7-7 can only be played straight: there is just one order.

Straight/box: both at once

A straight/box (or “combo”) play is a straight and a box on the same number, for double the price. If the exact order comes up you win both parts; if another order comes up you still win the box part.

What does it pay?

Prizes are set by each state lottery. In many states a $1 Pick 3 straight pays $500 and a $1 Pick 4 straight pays $5,000; box prizes are lower, depending on the number of ways. Always check your own state’s prize chart.

Fireball, Wild Ball and similar add-ons

Several states offer an add-on: an extra digit is drawn that can replace any one of the drawn digits, creating extra winning combinations. Florida, Texas, Illinois and others call it Fireball; Pennsylvania, Missouri, Tennessee and others call it Wild Ball. It usually doubles the cost of your play, and prizes won with the extra digit are smaller than the regular prizes. Rules differ slightly by state.

Do “hot” digits or sum filters help?

Every combination is equally likely in every draw. Filters are still useful to organize your plays: in Pick 3 the digit sums 13 and 14 are the most common (75 of 1,000 combinations each), and sums 10 to 17 cover 56% of all combinations. A sum filter doesn’t make any single play more likely to win; it just narrows down which plays you buy.

Frequently asked questions

What are the odds of winning Pick 3 straight?

1 in 1,000. For Pick 4 straight the odds are 1 in 10,000.

What is the difference between straight and box?

A straight play wins only in the exact order; a box play wins in any order, more often but with a smaller prize.

What is a 6-way box in Pick 3?

A box play with three different digits, such as 1-2-3. It wins if those digits come out in any of 6 orders: about 1 in 167.

How does Fireball or Wild Ball work?

An extra digit is drawn that can replace any one of the drawn digits, creating more winning combinations. It usually doubles the cost of the play, and those prizes are smaller.

Do sum filters improve my odds?

No. Every combination is equally likely. Filters only help you choose which plays to buy.
